Anxiety & Stress
Anxiety is not just a byproduct of modern life. Actually, it’s a strategy that our body uses to protect us. Yet when it’s not switched off, or if it becomes our natural state, it starts to take a toll on our wellbeing.
That’s when we need to intervene and correct the balance. And QH Sutherland Shire Hypnotherapy can help!
A normal stress response often enlists the creative part of us, the imagination, to assess how situations may play out so we can modify our behaviour to avoid danger: “What if there are tigers outside the cave? I better take an extra club and be ready to run”, for example.
However, once we’ve assessed the situation, our mind and body should take the foot off the pedal. It’s when that ‘anxiety pedal’ gets jammed that we can find ourselves red-lining and struggling to cope.
How Important Is It To Get A Handle On This?
Anxiety can affect anyone. But if we can’t manage it, not only does it affect our day-to-day life and relationships, it can become the bedrock for other serious problems such as auto-immune diseases and mental health issues like depression.
In fact, anxiety is often a key component in many other conditions such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), sleep disorders, panic attacks, social phobias, compulsions, PTSD, addictions and so forth.
What Symptoms Might I Be Experiencing?
Some common ones include feeling jaded, running things over and over in our minds, restlessness, feeling irritable, tension in the muscles, poor sleep patterns, poor concentration, feeling stuck and so forth.
We might have a sense of loss of control or personal power :-
- Unhelpful, cyclical thinking and ruminations, rehearsing imagined disaster with no useful coping strategies or ability to ‘turn-off’.
- Intolerance for surprises or the changes that inevitably come our way in life, and responding in ways that negatively affect ourselves or others.
- Feeling aggrieved or victimised and not having a way of moving past those feelings.
Are There Other Signs I Might Notice?
Some people experience behavioural tendencies toward panic. Other possible signs include, but are not limited to:-
- Heart pounding
- Perspiration
- Light-headedness
- Trembling
- Agitation
- Headaches
- Difficulty breathing
- Nausea
- Stomach pain
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Increased frequency of urination
- Diarrhea
However, it’s important to realize that while any of these may be indicative of a state of prolonged anxiety, any physiological symptom should be investigated by your GP as a matter of course.
What I Might Have Already Tried To Use For My Anxiety Or Stress
It sometimes happens that people experiencing anxiety symptoms get relief in the short term through unhelpful coping mechanisms. These can include: alcohol, drugs, ‘comfort’ eating, gambling, smoking, shopping, porn, video games, rituals, etc. Or personal habits like biting nails or pulling out hair.
The trouble is that none of these do anything to address the anxiety. In fact, after brief relief or distraction, they usually make things a whole lot worse!
